Greek Gov't Authorities & Healthcare: Champions of Corruption

Without a doubt, local government authorities, the public and healthcare sectors are champions of corruption in Greece. Don't take our word for it, a survey published by Transparency International-Greece claims that it has received more than 600 complaints from citizens regarding instances of corruption this year alone.

The report notes that the main areas of corruption involve local governments (12%), healthcare (11%), public sector (9.5%), private sector (9%), education (8%) and commerce (6.7%).

The report shows that:

  • 46% of complaints were filed by victims and 39% by witnesses
  • 85% were filed by single individuals
  • 38% were referred to other authority/service
  • 24% were informed on how and were to address complaints
  • 21% were filed in Attica and 12% in Central Macedonia
  • 59% were filed via telephone and 33% via email.

(Editor's Note: The only thing that the report did not note is how to fight this corruption. This does not really surprise us because we are starting to realize that Greeks love to talk... but never seem to want to do the walk.)
